I think most children go through a stage where they are convinced that there are monsters in their room at night. Whether the monsters are in the closet or under the bed… kids are terrified that they are there. No one likes to see their kiddo scared, and chances are they will probably end up in your bed if they are afraid to sleep in their own. So, I am going to share a few tips and tricks for encouraging your kids to be strong, and not scared of those imaginary monsters.
1. Investigate the Room with Them: Each night before you put your little one to bed take them around the room and investigate with them. Check the closet in their room and underneath their bed to show them that there is nothing to worry about and they are completely safe. This will give them some reassurance and make it a bit easier for them to fall asleep.
2. Create a “Monster Spray”: If just looking around the room isn’t enough for your kiddos, you can create a simple monster spray. All you need to do is put a bit of water in a spray bottle and tell them it is a monster banishing spray. Just spray it around the room and let them see that you have gotten rid of the all the monsters in the room.
3. Soothe Them: If they are feeling scared at bed time, try hanging out with them for a few minutes and just soothing them until they feel comfortable enough to fall asleep and not be scared.
4. Get a Nightlight: Sometimes sleeping in complete darkness can make things a bit scarier for them. Try getting a nightlight to put in their room to just provide light and comfortability within their room for them.
5. Monitor TV and Games: Lastly, I would recommend monitoring what video games they may be playing, or tv shows and movies they may be watching. If they are watching scary things on tv, this could be causing their scary mindset at night and even causing nightmares. If you take away these triggers, it will make night time a lot easier for them.
Chances are, your kids will probably go through this stage at some point but there are things you can do to prevent these scary feelings or help them out when they come along. I hope these tips help you out and make your kiddos’ night time routine a bit easier for both of you.
