Teaching Language Arts with Literature: A Pathways 2.0 Review

If you are a fan of teaching language arts with literature but creating lessons plans intimidates you, check out our Kendall Hunt Pathways 2.0 review.

I love literature-based learning. Anytime I can read a book with my kids and pull meaningful lessons from it, I do.

However, it can be daunting to find good books, pull together relevant activities and lessons, and do it over and over again week after week.

A few weeks ago, I found out about Kendall Hunt’s Pathways 2.0, and I’m excited to share my thoughts with you.

Teaching Language Arts with Literature

What is Pathways 2.0?

Kendall Hunt’s Pathways 2.0 is an elementary reading program that integrates all aspects of language arts – vocabulary, reading, writing, spelling, and phonics.

It’s organized around broad themes that focus on award-winning mentor texts that children will want to read. Themes include heroes (this is the one I received), my world, living things, walking with God, friends and family, environment, personal feelings, yesterday, and social issues.

How Can You Use This In Your Homeschool?

Each unit consists of a Teacher Daily Lesson Guide and a corresponding literature selection. The Teacher Daily Lesson Guide contains all you’ll need to teach and implement the lessons. It’s packed full of four weeks of language arts lessons, a day-by-day lesson plan, scripted lesson text, and all of the worksheets and assessments required.

Benefits of Using Reading Pathways 2.0

The TeacherDaily Lesson Guide clearly lays out what to teach each day and what resources you’ll need to implement the lessons. This is great for busy moms who don’t have the time (or the desire) to create lesson pans from scratch.

Each lesson in the guide clearly lays out each lesson’s objectives. This is helpful for parents who worry about gaps. The objectives, and the sample lesson scripts, take the guesswork out of teaching the lessons.

Everything you need is available in one convenient book. From the lesson planner to the sample lesson scripts, it couldn’t be easier to use this program. And, with all of the worksheets and resources located in the back of the book, you can make copies for all of your kids. This is perfect for homeschool moms who love non-consumable curriculum that you can use year after year with child after child.

Because Reading Pathways 2.0 is designed to be used in a classroom setting, the plans can look a bit overwhelming. But, we homeschool moms know it’s okay to take from a curriculum what is most meaningful to our kids and dismiss the rest.

In summary, this is a solid program with many great benefits, and it’s a program that can be easily adapted for a homeschool environment.

I think this program would work well for moms who are teaching multiple ages and want to keep them together. This program could work well with older preschoolers through grade 2 with a little bit of tweaking for each age.

It would also work well for moms who like using traditional curriculum – textbooks and workbooks – with a mix of hands-on activities.

The scripted lessons and detailed lesson plans are perfect for new homeschoolers who are looking for a little structure to help them feel confident in their homeschool journey.

So, tell me… how would Kendall Hunt’s Pathways 2.0 help you in your homeschool journey? Be sure to explore the Pathways 2.0 brochure for
