What is story sequencing?

It’s important to put the events in the right order when telling a story. That way, the listener can follow along and understand what’s going on. There are different ways to sequence a story, but one of the most common is to start at the beginning and move chronologically through the events.

This means that you’ll start with the very first event, describe what happened next, and so on. Worksheets like the ones presented in this post are perfect for teaching children how to do this.

What’s included?

This two page pack includes everything your child needs to sequence the story. You’ll find a one-page sequencing mat with eight places for your student to place a story sequencing disc. There is also one page containing eight sequencing discs.

Preparing the Printables

If you’d like this to be a one-off activity, print both pages on standard printer paper and have kids cut and paste the discs onto the mat. To make this reusable, print the pages on cardstock and laminate them for durability. Put a velcro dot on each circle and on the back of each disc.

Completing the Activity

If you use the activity as seatwork, kids can sequence the story as you read it aloud or share the video above. When complete, have the children retell the story aloud to a friend or family member. This is a great way to assess their comprehension skills.
