Young learners will have fun practicing their counting skills with this free activity featuring Johnny Appleseed for preschool.
Can you believe we’re already talking about autumn and back-to-school preschool activities? I can’t! It seems this summer has flown by. Maybe, it’s because I’ve spent most of it indoors with a broken ankle.
I may not have enjoyed much of the summer sunshine this summer, but I have spent a lot of time thinking of fun activities to do with our preschoolers. And, as we head straight into a brand new school year, I’ve got quite a few autumn activities featuring Johnny Appleseed.
As you gear up for a brand new homeschool preschool year, don’t miss this fun counting game. It’s a great way to have little ones work on fine motor skills as they gain confidence in their counting skills. All with a fun Johnny Appleseed for preschool theme!
Counting with Johnny Appleseed for Preschool
Today, I have a fun counting mat for your preschoolers. Just print it, laminate it, and you’re all set for a fun counting activity.
Grab a dice or two. I like these large foam die from Amazon. You can use any dice you have on hand.
Fill a small bowl or ramekin with black beans. These will be your “apple seeds” for this activity. If you don’t have black beans on hand, you can use black playdough, small black buttons, or actual apple seeds.
Have your child roll the dice (choose 1 for counting to 6 or two for counting to 12). Count the dots on the dice. Count out the correct number of “seeds” and place them inside the apple.
To increase the focus on fine motor skills, you can have your child use tongs or tweezers to transfer the apple seeds from the bowl to the counting mat.
I recommend the following resources for assembling this counting activity:
