I love teaching preschoolers about bees. It helps to minimize the fear associated with these insects.
When teaching about bees, be sure to discuss the life cycle of a bee, read nonfiction books about bees, and make at least one bee craft for preschoolers.
Fun Bee Facts for Preschoolers
• The life cycle of a bee has four steps – eggs, larva, pupa, and adult.
• There are three different kinds of bees in a beehive – the workers, the drones, and a queen.
• Honey bees talk to each other through a special “waggle dance”.
• Bees collect nectar and pollen to make honey and feed the other bees in the hive.
Facts About Queen Bees
• The queen bee rules the hive and lays all the eggs in the hive. She can lay up to one million eggs in her lifetime.
• The queen bee is the largest bee in the colony.
Facts About Worker Bees
• Worker bees are female.
• An average worker bee only makes one teaspoon of honey in its lifetime.
• The worker bee is the smallest of the honey bees.
Facts About Making Honey
• To make honey, a honey bee will drop nectar into its honeycomb and fan it with their wings.
