Parts of a Pumpkin

The parts of a pumpkin include the stem, the rind (or flesh), the seeds, and the pulp (or pumpkin guts).

The stem is the part of the pumpkin that you hold on to when you’re carving. The rind/flesh is the orange part of the pumpkin that you carve into.

The seeds are what start the life cycle of a pumpkin. And the pumpkin guts are, well, the guts of the pumpkin!

Parts of a Pumpkin Worksheet

This worksheet is a great way to assess your preschooler’s knowledge of the parts of a pumpkin. Add it to your preschool pumpkins unit study this fall.

What You’ll Need

  • Pumpkin (optional)
  • Parts of a Pumpkin Worksheet (download below)
  • Glue stick
  • Crayons (optional)
  • Scissors

What You’ll Do

After teaching your preschoolers about the parts of a pumpkin, they can complete our worksheet. There are four versions available – two black/white and two color.

One set includes the terms rind and pulp while the other set includes the term flesh and guts. Choose which one works best for you.

Children can color the black and white version if you’d like before starting the labeling process.

Cut out the six labels at the bottom of the page. Choose a label and read it for your preschooler. Have them identify that part on the worksheet and glue the label in the box.

Continue in this manner until all six labels are properly glued onto the parts of a pumpkin diagram.

Pumpkins are edible fruits that grow from vines. They are related to cucumbers, squash, and watermelons.

The seeds are one part of the pumpkin that is eaten. You can also use the pumpkin pulp (or guts) to make pumpkin pie or pumpkin muffins.

The flesh is the outer (orange) part of the pumpkin. If you carve pumpkins, you’re carving into the flesh or rind.

The stem is the part that holds the pumpkin on the vine. It’s also the part that you hold onto when you’re carving.

Pumpkin Crafts for Kids

Next, get creative with some pumpkin crafts! Preschoolers love getting their hands dirty, and there are tons of easy and fun pumpkin crafts that they can make.

You can have your preschoolers help you carve a pumpkin with a simple smiley face. If kids don’t mind getting their hands dirty, they can be in charge of scooping out the guts and pulling out the seeds.

Toast the pumpkin seeds or use the pulp to make a pumpkin pie or pumpkin muffins.
