How to Build a Leprechaun Trap

Learn how to build a simple leprechaun trap using a shoe box, rainbow paper, and gold coins. This easy St. Patrick’s Day craft is perfect for preschoolers.

Materials

  • Shoe box with lid
  • Green construction paper
  • Red orange, yellow, blue, and purple construction paper
  • Cotton balls
  • Small plastic or paper hat
  • Green foil shreds or paper filler
  • Chocolate gold coins
  • St. Patrick’s Day stickers
  • 12- inch dowel rod
  • Tape or glue

Instructions

Step 1: Cover the Box

  • Cut green construction paper to fit the outside and inside of the shoe box. Glue or tape the paper in place to fully cover the box and lid.

Step 2: Make the Rainbow

  • Cut 1-inch strips of red, orange, yellow, blue, and purple construction paper. Fold about 1 inch at each end of the strips and glue or tape them onto a half sheet of purple paper to form a rainbow arch.

Step 3: Add the Clouds

  • Glue a cotton ball to each end of the rainbow strips to create clouds.

Step 4: Fill the Hat

  • Place green foil shreds inside the small hat. Add chocolate gold coins on top.

Step 5: Prepare the Trap Base

  • Fill the shoe box lid with green foil shreds. Set the hat filled with gold coins inside the lid.

Step 6: Decorate the Box

  • Decorate the outside of the covered shoe box using St. Patrick’s Day stickers.

Step 7: Prop the Trap

  • Place the larger part of the shoe box over the lid. Position the dowel rod underneath to prop the box open.

Step 8: Set the Trap

  • Place the trap in your chosen spot the night before St. Patrick’s Day and check it in the morning.
