Winter Animals Worksheets
This set of winter animals worksheets includes thirteen color and trace printables.
Each worksheet is formatted the same. There is a large image of each animal for preschoolers to color. They can look at real images of the animals and mimic the colors, or they can use their imaginations and color how they’d like.
After coloring the image, preschoolers will trace a sentence stating the name of each animal and its starting letter. For example, one page features a large polar bear to color along with the sentence “P is for polar bear.”
Both of these activities will help preschoolers learn more about these fascinating creatures, and have a great time doing it!

Completing the Activity
Introduce the worksheets to preschoolers, explaining that they will be learning about different winter animals and their names.
Have preschoolers look at real images of the animals and mimic the colors, or allow them to use their imaginations and color how they’d like.
After coloring the image, preschoolers will trace a sentence stating the name of each animal and its starting letter.
Once all of the tracing is complete, have preschoolers finish coloring in the rest of the image.
Display the finished worksheets in a prominent place for parents and other caregivers to see.
Using These Worksheets with Multiple Skill Levels
Preschoolers can benefit from different instruction methods, according to their individual needs.
Some preschoolers may need more time to complete the worksheets, so you may want to provide them with more time to finish.
Others may need more help with tracing and spelling, so you can offer assistance as needed.
Encouraging preschoolers to use their imaginations while coloring can also be a great way to differentiate instruction.
Some kids will want to stay within the lines and color exactly what’s shown in the picture. Others will want to create their own unique version of each animal.
As long as they’re learning and having fun, let preschoolers choose their own method of coloring!
Winter Animals Books for Kids
There are a plethora of children’s books about winter animals that can help preschoolers learn more about these fascinating creatures.
Some of our favorites include:
- The Mitten by Jan Brett. This Caldecott Medal-winning book tells the story of a boy who loses his mittens in the snow, and the animals who find them and take them in.
- The Hat by Jan Brett. Another one of Jan Brett’s popular books, this book tells the story of a hedgehog who finds himself stuck in a stocking that falls off the clothesline and all the animals who laugh at his new “hat”.
- Winter on the Farm by Laura Ingalls Wilder. Winter has come to the Wilder family farm in upstate New York. Almanzo goes through his afternoon barn chores, and then sits down to eat a hearty farm supper with his family.
All of these books are available at most local libraries and bookstores. They make for excellent read-alouds, and preschoolers will love learning more about winter animals through these stories!
