Wild West Alphabet Puzzle

Learning the alphabet should be fun and engaging. It can be when you add great hands-on games and activities. Puzzles help little ones work on logical thinking as they work on certain skills – the alphabet in this case.

Round out your activity time with some of your favorite alphabet books for preschoolers.

Setting Up the Activity

To set up this activity for your little learners, you’ll need to print out all of the puzzle pages. I suggest printing them on cardstock and laminating them for durability. Cut them apart so that each puzzle has three pieces.

You can store these puzzles in a plastic baggie or zippered pencil pouch. Pencil pouches with grommets (the kind you use in a three-ring binder) can then be hung on a hook in your literacy center.

Using the Puzzles

Once you’ve printed and prepared the puzzles, decide how many you want to use. You could start with a small handful of letters for beginners or use more for more advanced students.

Whatever you decide, separate the puzzle pieces into three piles – uppercase, lowercase, and images. Have your student choose an uppercase letter and then find the matching lowercase letter. Then, complete the puzzle by finding the picture that begins with that letter’s sound.

Evaluating Students

As your student completes each puzzle, have them mark the letters on the alphabet mat. They can trace the letter or dot it with a dot marker.

This is just another chance for learners to identify the letters of the alphabet, and a good chance for you to see which letters they still need to work on.
