3 Benefits to Online Learning for Preschoolers
Technology can be a real asset to teaching and reinforcing important academic skills. Discover 3 benefits to using online learning with preschoolers.
I know that screen time often gets a bad rap. There are definitely pros and cons when it comes to children and all of the media devices they have access to these days – TV, tablets, smart phones, and computers.
While too much screen time has its downside, technology can and should play a role as long as it remains beneficial.
Online Learning with Preschoolers
One of my favorite online programs for preschoolers is Reading Eggs. With two levels for preschoolers, you can easily meet your child’s needs. Reading Eggs Junior is geared toward ages 2-4 while Reading Eggs is geared toward ages 3-7.
Mix It Up
Sometimes you just need to put away the workbooks and phonics texts. My son hated anything that involved paper and pencil. He didn’t want any part of working on alphabet printables or workbooks I picked up at Dollar Tree.
He would, however, play computer games as long as I’d let him. Reading Eggs has games designed to teach and reinforce letter sounds, letter recognition, sight words, and much more. They’re perfect for young learners who don’t enjoy writing.
Self-Paced Learning
I’ll never forget breaking out my phonics curriculum one morning and settling in for lessons with my daughter. She cried and cried, because she already knew what I was teaching her yet I persisted in finishing the lesson. I later lamented to my mother-in-law that I didn’t know what to do with her, because she was ahead of the game. She was already reading, but I was afraid of missing an important step.
Online programs, such as Reading Eggs and MathSeeds, allow kids to move along at their own pace. With Reading Eggs, you can have your child take a placement test to determine where they should start. Or, for beginning readers, you can choose to have them start at the beginning.
This allows you to tailor your child’s education to their unique needs and abilities. My youngest would fly through her lessons while my middle child went at a much slower pace until reading clicked for him in about the third grade.
It’s Rewarding
If you have kids like mine, ones who love stickers and rewards for a job well done, they’ll love this aspect of Reading Eggs. As kids complete each step of the lesson, they get immediate feedback. The voice may tell them “that’s right” or “yes” or “well done” for a correct answer.
Then, at the end of the lesson, they will get a bigger positive reinforcement. It may be a dancing unicorn or a bunch of balloons floating across the screen. My kids were anxious to keep playing to see what would happen at the end of each lesson.
This is a great way to motivate reluctant readers!
