I don’t know about your kids, but my boys loved all things pirate when they were younger. Combine that with my love of all things monkey, and this activity is perfect for us all!

I Spy games have many benefits. They help children build visual discrimination skills as they search for each item in the game. My I Spy games also encourage kids to practice counting as they count each item and write the number on the recording sheet.

To Prep the I Spy Game

Print and laminate all pages. Then, cut apart the cards. If you choose to use this was a traditional I Spy game, you’re all set.

To set up an I Spy sensory bin, fill a small bin with a filler. I used blue and clear water beads, because I had them on hand. You can use whatever you want. I also threw in some bananas, because I had those on hand, too.

To Play I Spy

To play I Spy the traditional way, I suggest placing the cards facedown on the table. Have kids flip the top card over. Find and count that image on the I Spy mat. Write the numeral, number word, or tallies on the recording page.

If they need help keeping track of the images, it might help them to cross off the images as they find them on the mat or cover them with a counter.

To set this up as a sensory bin, fill your bin as described above. “Hide” the cards in the bin. Have kids pick the cards out of the bin one at a time. Then, find and count the items on the I Spy mat. As described above, write the numeral, number word, or tallies on the recording page.

Continue in this manner until all of the images have been found and counted.
