We love animals of all kinds in my house. My daughter could never choose a favorite, because she loves them all. For three years straight, we studied animals in science, because she wanted to learn about them all.

If you’ve got an animal lover like I do, you’ll love adding these forest animal writing prompts to your writing center. They can easily be added to any of your upcoming animal study units, as well.

Forest Animal Writing Prompts

These writing prompts are very basic. Each one includes an animal picture, and the statement “I Can Write About…”

With such a general statement for a prompt, kids can use these writing pages in a variety of ways. And, by adding the word cards to your writing center, more fluent writers will can be challenged.

Young Writers

Young preschoolers can use these pages for copywork. Have them copy a sentence or two from a book about the featured animal. This could be a fiction or a nonfiction book. This is great for handwriting practice, as well as exposing young writers to proper sentence structure.

When they’re done, let them color the picture on the page. They may prefer to turn the page over and draw a picture of their own on the back.

Older Writers

Older writers can also use these pages for copywork. It’s never a bad idea to work on handwriting. However, they can also use these writing prompts for a beginner report. Read a short nonfiction book to your preschooler, and have them write (or dictate) their favorite animal fact.

If creative writing is more their style, these pages are perfect for that. This printable pack includes a blank lined page. I suggest copying it on the back of the writing prompt. That gives your creative writers more space to tell their story.

If you display the word cards in your writing center, kids can use them to spark a new idea or to see how words are spelled.

What’s In the Pack?

You’ll receive seven forest animal writing prompts, a set of word cards, and an extra fully-lined writing page for advanced writers.

I recommend not correcting your preschool/kindergarten writer’s spelling on these pages. Just let them put their stories on paper. This will help them learn to love the writing process without the fear of “doing it wrong.”

They can use the word bank cards if they want. These cards can help spark their imaginations or help them spell words correctly. However, they’re optional. If your child will be intimidated by them, feel free to leave them out.
