Christmas Letter Matching Alphabet Game

This Christmas-themed letter matching alphabet game will give kids a hands-on opportunity to work on letter recognition this holiday season! 

The letter game is designed to help children learn the alphabet by matching capital letters and their respective lowercase letters.

Playing alphabet matching games is a fun and interactive way for kids to improve their literacy skills. They will have a blast trying to match all the letter ornaments to the correct Christmas tree!

This fun activity does take a little time to prep. Cutting out the ornaments can be a bear, but the effort it takes to prepare this Christmas activity for preschoolers will be well worth it when your little ones master recognizing letters of the alphabet!

Feel free to make as many copies of these letter cards and game pieces that you need for your kiddos.

Preparing the Activity

To get started, I suggest you print all of the pages on cardstock. It’s sturdier than regular printer paper and can stand up to repeated use. Laminating the pages before cutting them out will add yet another layer of durability. 

Then, just cut it all out. I use a paper cutter to cut out the tree cards. It makes that part go much quicker than cutting out all of the circles on the last few pages. 

Once you’ve got all of the pieces cut out, you’re all set! You can also put velcro dots on each circle and on the back of each ornament, if you’d like.

This alphabet matching game is perfect for your educational activities this holiday season. 

Completing the Activity

I suggest starting with just two or three of the Christmas tree cards. Have your child identify the letter featured on the Christmas tree card. Then, search through the ornaments for four more of that letter – two uppercase letters and two lower case letters. 

Place the ornaments on the circles on the correct tree to decorate the alphabet trees. 

As your kids become more proficient with the 2 or 3 cards you started with, add a few more. Continue doing this until your kids can correctly sort all of the ornaments onto the correct Christmas trees. 

Teaching Letter Recognition

It’s never too early to work on letter recognition. This is one of the most important skills a child will learn. Teaching children how to read starts with learning their ABC’s. And, this activity is perfect for your preschool and kindergarten literacy center.

Because books and printed materials use a wide variety of fonts, it’s important for kids to be able to recognize the alphabet in a variety of fonts.

Activities like this one are a fun way to have kids learn to differentiate one letter from another as each set of letter ornaments features a different font.
