What Kids Learn From Letter Matching Games

Letter matching games can help foster critical thinking and problem solving skills in young children. They help to efficiently teach letter identification and help kids to remember the distinctive shapes of different letters.

By actively engaging with the game, rather than merely viewing it, they learn important logical strategies while also gaining recognition of different symbols and shapes.

Games that encourage letter recognition help to form a strong foundation for subsequent literacy development which is essential for success in school.

Preparing the Activity

To get started, I suggest you print all of the pages on cardstock. It’s sturdier than regular printer paper and can stand up to repeated use. Laminating the pages before cutting them out will add yet another layer of durability.

Then, just cut it all out. I use a paper cutter to cut out the tree cards. It makes that part go much quicker than cutting out all of the circles on the last few pages.

Once you’ve got all of the pieces cut out, you’re all set! You can also put velcro dots on each circle and on the back of each ornament, if you’d like.

Completing the Activity

I suggest starting with just two or three of the Christmas tree cards. Have your child identify the letter featured on the Christmas tree card. Then, search through the ornaments for four more of that letter – two uppercase letters and two lower case letters.

Place the ornaments on the circles on the correct tree to decorate the alphabet trees.

As your kids become more proficient with the 2 or 3 cards you started with, add a few more. Continue doing this until your kids can correctly sort all of the ornaments onto the correct Christmas trees.

Teaching Letter Recognition

It’s never too early to work on letter recognition. This is one of the most important skills a child will learn. Teaching children how to read starts with learning their ABC’s. And, this activity is perfect for your preschool and kindergarten literacy center.

Because books and printed materials use a wide variety of fonts, it’s important for kids to be able to recognize the alphabet in a variety of fonts.

Activities like this one are a fun way to have kids learn to differentiate one letter from another as each set of letter ornaments features a different font.

Christmas Tree Books for Kids

Christmas tree books for kids have become a popular way to celebrate the holidays with young readers. While these books featuring a festive evergreen as its focal point may not be as traditional as some carols or stories, they can often be filled with fun holiday-themed visuals and underlying messages.

Christmas tree books for kids also come in different varieties, from those focused on nature to page-turners about Santa’s antics.

By introducing children to the joy of a book featuring a Christmas tree, librarians and parents can inspire the little ones in their lives to read more during the season of giving, while simultaneously providing them with a source of entertainment.
