CVC Word Game

This low-prep activity is a breeze to put together, and is sure to engage your little learners.

All you need to do is print and laminate the apple word cards. Cut them apart, and put them in a small bowl.

Fill another small bowl with foam letters, magnet letters, or letter beads. Now, you’re all set to learn!

Now that you’ve got the activity prepped, have your child choose an apple card from the bowl.

Help them read/sound out the word. Now, have them find the letters to spell out that CVC word.

That’s it! Easy peasy!

What are CVC words?

CVC words are three-letter words that follow a consonant-short vowel-consonant pattern. They’re the simplest words for new readers to sound out.

Why teach CVC words?

When young readers know the sounds each letter makes, they can begin sounding out words. As they are able to sound out more and more words, they gain confidence in their reading ability.

Is my child ready to for this?

This activity can be used with kids who aren’t quite ready to read.

First, this activity works on letter recognition. Kids will hunt for letters to match the letters on the word card.

Young readers can work on reinforcing letter sounds. As they pull the letters out and place them on the table, have them name the letter sound. If they’re too young, you can just focus on sounds without having them try to string those sounds together.
