Have you ever asked your preschoolers what they think happens to snowmen at night?

Your kids spend all day building a tall snowman, but when they wake up in the morning he looks a little different. Maybe he’s a little shorter. Is his hat all askew?

Snowmen at Night is a great book to read with your preschoolers at this time of year.

We got our first snow overnight, and while we didn’t get enough to build a snowman, it sure did put us in the mood.

Snowmen At Night

In this sweet story, a little boy builds a snowman. The next morning, he notices that his snowman looks a bit different than it did the night before. This makes him wonder what it is snowmen do at night. How do they spend their time when the little people are fast asleep?

This question can lead to some pretty imaginative conversations with little ones as they create outrageous narratives about what they think snowmen do at night.

Snowmen at Night Art Project

After you’ve read the story with your preschoolers, why not let them create their own snowmen at night.

All you’ll need is a white crayon, construction paper (blue, black, white, and orange), and glue or a glue stick.

Have your kids ever noticed their snowman looks a little different in the morning? Is he a little droopy? A little lop-sided? Do they ever wonder what it is he did overnight? Read Snowmen at Night, do a little art, and let them create a story answering that very question. | homeschoolpreschool.net

For your youngest preschoolers or those who may be a bit of a perfectionist (like mine were), you may want to draw a circle guideline on their paper before they get started.

Let them glue their torn paper squares to make a snowman. Use the black for buttons, eyes, and mouth if desired. Tear a little triangle from the orange for his nose. Add a scarf, if desired. We used orange since I already had it out.

When your little ones are satisfied with their snowman, show them how to draw simple snowflakes (use an “x” with a line crossing through it) all around their snowman.

Voila! You now have a lovely snowmen at night art project to put on display!
