Paper Plate Watermelon Craft

Summer is the perfect time to make this adorable paper plate watermelon craft. It’s so easy for preschoolers to make this adorable paper plate craft!

My son loves sweet, drippy, juicy watermelon. We enjoy it frequently in the summertime.

I knew he’d be excited about these simple, fun watermelon activities. And I’m sure your preschooler will be too.

Paper Plate Watermelon Craft

We started by naming what colors we see on watermelon. We also talked about that watermelon starts with “W” and made the “w” beginning sound.

We started with a paper plate cut in half.

Then my 3 year-old painted the plate with pink paint. You could also color the plate with marker if you don’t have paint on hand.

The paint we used dried pretty quickly so we were able to move on to the next step.

We glued a strip of green crepe paper streamer along the bottom for the rind. Then my son used his thumbprints to put the seeds on with ink.

This was good fine motor practice trying to use only his thumb, place it on the paper and pick it up again.

We continued our watermelon fun with a counting activity. I just cut five triangles of red paper, glued the same green crepe paper from our art activity along the bottom and wrote numbers 1-5.

We started by laying out the pieces in number order. Then we used chocolate chips to place the correct number of “seeds” on each piece.

You could also use black buttons, pom poms or raisins. I didn’t happen to have any of these on hand and my son LOVES chocolate chips.

So I decided to allow him the treat and make the game even more appealing.

It’s the perfect time of year for watermelon and these activities were easy and quick to set up and do.

Next time we have watermelon in our kitchen I’m sure we’ll do these again and finish up the fun with a sweet, juicy snack!
