5 Ways Moms Can Make ‘Me Time’ a Priority

It’s important for moms to find a few minutes to focus on themselves. Here are five ways busy moms can take a few minutes to have some “me time.”

I can hear you now. “Me time?” What’s that? How in the world am I supposed to make time for me when I have so much to do as a wife and mom?

I understand. I am a mom of three. Granted, my kids are ‘big’ now, but they were little once, too. I had mine four and five years apart so I had ‘littles’ for.ever! As soon as one started to gain a little independence… along came another baby.

That’s not a complaint, it’s just how things worked out. But, I was tired! I nursed (and couldn’t pump) so I was never too far away from baby in that first year. I was tired. I was frazzled. I never thought I’d see “me time” again.

But it’s important, no matter how many kids you have or how old they are, to carve out a little time each day for you. It doesn’t have to be hours. It doesn’t have to be away from home. Just a few minutes of solitude really can refresh you enough to make it through another hectic day.

Make ‘Me Time’ a Priority

Whether you’re a single mom or married, have one kid or five (or more), work outside the home or stay home with your kids, you need to make time to refresh your self and your brain. You have to make you a priority at least a few minutes each day. Here are five ways you can make ‘me time’ a priority without spending a lot of money or even leaving the house.

Take a walk. If possible, have someone watch your kids so you can take a walk. Do you have a friend you can swap childcare with? Do you have an older child who is responsible enough to watch the younger ones? Is your spouse home to give you a few minutes to take a walk around the block?

If you have really little ones and no childcare, put them in the stroller and hit the road. A little exercise (and change of scenery) may be just the thing you need to perk up.

Make a coffee/tea/ice cream date with yourself. You could do this at home if you can take advantage of nap time or an early bedtime for the kids. If you can get out of the house for a little bit, take advantage of that. For just a few dollars, you can treat yourself to a cup of tea or coffee. You could take a trip to your favorite ice cream shop.

If you’re low on cash, watch for a Groupon. Starbucks offers them periodically as do many local eateries.

Find a hobby. I try to find a little time a few nights a week to crochet. I recently purchased a journaling Bible, too. I’m enjoying spending a few extra minutes each morning coloring during my study time. Another thing I really enjoy is decorating my planner.

None of these activities takes more than a little time, but they’re all something I do for ‘me.’ Do you cross stitch, knit, scrapbook, make soaps? Try to find a little time each week to work on a craft or hobby.

Read. Not a kid book! Read something for you. When my kids were younger, I read a lot of magazines. With short articles and stories, it was really all I had time to read. As they got older, I started finding time to read books again.

Right now, I keep a magazine (or homeschool catalog) on the kitchen table to peruse while I eat. I try to read a little before bed, too. In those rare moments I find some downtime in my day, I grab a book to read.

Find a favorite show to watch. I very rarely have time to live TV. I DVR everything! On Tuesday night, my hubby takes Em to dance, and I have an hour to watch one of my favorite shows.

It can be tempting to sneak in a nap when you have some downtime. Sometimes, it may be downright necessary when your kids are sick or teething or not sleeping through the night. If that’s the case, take a nap.

If not, don’t do a chore. Don’t check something off your to-do. Take a few minutes for yourself first. Refresh and regroup. It’ll make you a much happier mom.

What do you do to ensure you get some ‘me time’ in your busy schedule?
